Abstract:
This is UBIC's maiden annual report, highlighting the project's achievements over a one-year period and outlining plans for the coming year. This short report is packed with news features and photos to help readers to visualize some of the activities and events that UBIC carried out in the year. Right from the launch of UBIC, through the process of conducting perceptions studies, up to conducting two successful essay contests, this report will form a critical resource material for partners, researchers, and communication practitioners seeking to implement similar activities. In 2014, UBIC conducted the second round of Biotech Essay contests and got an overwhelming response with 117submissions from twelve secondary and tertiary institutions. UBIC plans to double the number of submissions and participating institutions in 2015, and a Call for Submission of entries will be made in the first quarter of the year. Also read about UBIC's premier public opinion research and survey to gauge the public's perceptions about biotechnology and genetic engineering. This survey helped to guide UBIC's communication and outreach plans in order to develop relevant and appropriate messages. The survey results also informed the choice of IEC materials developed by UBIC and its partners. Some of these materials have been translated into regional local languages of Uganda and efforts are underway to develop and translate more information messages on agricultural innovations. UBIC is also using new media and modern communication technologies to reach out to its targeted audience.
