Abstract:
A study conducted in Kumi, Katakwi and Lira districts in 2002 identified Prosopis africana as an important source of poles and fuel. Its charcoal is • . especially used by blacksmiths. The tree also is also highly medicinal, and its fruits are fed on by livestock. In view of its multiplicity of uses, Prosopis africana was identified as one of the most important indigenous tree species with potential for agroforestry in the Teso and Lango farming systems. In Teso, Prosopis africana was ranked highest among indigenous pole trees. Its poles are strong and are widely used in local construction. NARO Conclusion and acknowledgement Timber from Prosopis africana is hard and fairly heavy. It has a pleasant smell when freshly cut. Though the wood is difficult to saw, it is durable and easy to curve or glue and has a very wide range of uses. The tree produces excellent charcoal and firewood used for cooking in many rural households.
