Abstract:

The national potato program based at Kachwekano ZARDI wishes to present
fourteen candidate potato varieties to national variety release committee for
official release and inclusion on national variety list for Uganda. The fourteen
varieties being presented have been evaluated for three years from 2017 to
2020 and have been observed to have good attributes in terms of yield,
processing qualities and adaptability in key agro-ecological zones for potato
production. The yield of these varieties range 24-36 1/ha. These varieties,
have good processing qualities (crisping and chipping) and can as well be
used as table potato. The varieties being presented include two NARO bred
varieties; 20151.5 and 20158.14 and 12 Dutch varieties (Jelly, Fonda,
Manitou, Acoustic, Sunred, Caruso, Masai, Georgina, Zarina, Rumba,
Allison and Lady Terra).
The majority of the varieties have tuber shapes 'that are meet the processing
qualities and with high acceptability degree for uptake by the market.
Therefore if these varieties are released and utilized by farmers under good
management systems, they will contribute significantly to household income
and nutritional food security. The proposed names of the NARO bred varieties
are; NAROPOT 5 (20151.5) and NAROPOT 6 (20158.14) while the Dutch
varieties will maintain their accession names from the breeding companies.
The research4am is convinced that they should be released to farmers for
uptake ap4tutiliation. KAZARDI pledges to provide the foundation seed to
the varieties listed for multiplication and utilization in Uganda.
