Abstract:
Groundnuts are a widely grown legume in Uganda. They are rich in protein and fats and can be used for industrial oil extraction. The by products provide animal feed. Groundnuts also improve soil fertility through nitrogen fixation. Groundnut production and yield is low because of groundnut rosette disease. Serenut-2 is rosette resistant, high yielding, and is tolerant to drought.Harvest groundnuts when the inside of shells has dark markings and the seed is brown in colour. Harvesting is done by lifting using lumbugu hoe to avoid pod damage. Premature harvesting lowers yields, oil content and quality. Delayed harvesting results into poor quality seed due to mould infections leading to aflatoxin contamination.
