Abstract:
The pineapple crop has been in cultivation in the world for a long time. It was first discovered by an explorer, Christopher Colombus, in 1493 in the West Indies Southern America. In Uganda, commercial pineapple production was introduced in the 60's with the smooth cayenne variety. Otherwise a variety called queen "Fransa' with spiny leaves was already being grown on small scale. The smooth cayenne has become the dominant variety in Uganda partly because of local and external markets. It is now grown in the districts of Mubende, Iganga, Kamuli, Tororo, Mbarara, Bushenyi, Mukono, Mpigi, Masaka and the Islands of Lake Victoria. Other varieties such as Red Spanish, Selangor Green, Masmerah, Hana, PR 1/67 (a hybrid) were introduced into the country but have not been multiplied to reach farmers.
