Abstract:

Since the early 1960s, potato production has expanded more rapidly than
that of any other major root or tuber crop in Asia, Africa, or Latin America.
Although consumption trends show that potato is a popular food in the
developing world, greater consumption is constrained by the elevated cost
or lack of availability of high-quality seed tubers. Therefore, for the past
sixteen years, scientists at CIP have been improving true potato seed (TPS)
technology to provide a low-cost alternative to vegetative propagation. To
date, results from selected countries indicate that TPS could make a major
contribution to potato agriculture of this century
