Abstract:
The Kyoga basin has two large lakes, i.e. Kyoga and Kwania, which are fairly well studied compared with more than 30 smaller ones with scanty fisheries information. Estimates of annual fish catches from lakes Kyoga and Kwania were regularly updated by the Department of Fisheries Resources (DFR) between 1963 and 1989. In 2006 NaFIRRI made catch estimates based on ad hoc surveys of lakes Kyoga, Kwania and Nakuwa and in June 2008 MAAIF, through DFR funded Frame and Catch assessment survey of the Kyoga Basin lakes. Between July 2008 and June 2009, NaFIRRI also dedicated ARTP2-extension funds for further fisheries surveys of the Kyoga basin lakes. These efforts enabled estimation of fish catch rates, annual catches and gross revenue from landings of lakes Kyoga, Kwania, Bisina and Nakuwa and some smaller lakes (Gawa, Gigati, Kawi, Komunuo, Lemwa, Meito, Nyaguo, Nyasala, Opeta).
