Abstract:
Agriculture currently dominates Uganda’s economy, employing 72 percent of the population, contributing 22.2% of GDP and generating 42% of the exports earnings. The agricultural sector is still characterized by low-input, low-output leading to dismal growth in the sector that registered 1.5 percent growth in Financial Year 2013/14.
Uganda’s population stands at about 34.9 million people as of 2014. Uganda has one of the fastest growing populations in the world at an annual growth rate of 3.2%. There are about 4.2 million small holder farmers in the country with 23 million (66 percent) people living in agriculture households. Uganda’s land area is estimated at 200,523 square kilometres (83% of Uganda’s total area) with an estimated 91,151,800 hectares (91,151.8 square kilometres) in 2010 under agriculture
