Abstract:
Tanzania depends heavily on agriculture for its social and economic development Agricultural sector contributes more than 50% of the country's GDP, 75% of earnings and provides about 85% of total employment. The sector will continue to be an important vehicle for Tanzania's drive to economic growth. With the exception of a few private and parastatal farms most of the farms are small averaging 1.2 hectares per household. The smallholder farmers contribute 75% of the export earnings and 80% of the value of marketed grains. Despite agriculture being the backborne to Tanzania's economy, agricultural and food production per capita in Tanzania, as in many other developing countries has been declining over the years.
