Abstract:

A high level of crop management was exhibited during this season at Namulonge. Blanket fertilizer applications at the rates of 90 kg N/ha and 60 kg P205 were general to all the experimental fields. Throughout the season the fields were kept weed free so it was not surprising to find that some plots yielded up to 10 t/ha. However, in all the trials the entries that were locally dressed at Namulonge germinated poorly and gave lower yields than expected despite the good management. This was due to the high concentration of fungicide dressing which resulted in poor germination (less than 50% stands). The affected varieties were EV 8428-SR, EV 8429-SR, and EV 8443-SR. Prior to the harsh seed treatment germination was about 98%.
