Abstract:
Livestock production constitutes an important subsector
of the agricultural production in Uganda
contributing about 90<'o of total GDP. It is estimated
that mixed farming smallholders and pastoralists
own over 90% of the cattle herd and 100% of the
small ruminants, pigs and poultry and produce the
bulk of domestic milk and slaughter animals. Major
constraints to livestock production are: low genetic
potential; inadequate nutrition; high mobidity and
mortality caused by diseases and pests and socioeconomic
factors limiting farmers access to land,
improved management packages and entrepreneurial
skills, labour, capital and market.
