The National Agricultural Organization (NARO) has been receiving support from the
Government of Uganda (GoU), World Bank, the European Union, DANIDA and
other development partners. The World Bank, through the Agricultural Research and
Training Program (ARTP), has provided the bulk of the support. The first phase of
ARTP (ARTP I) started in 1993 and ended in 1998. The second phase of ARTP
(ARTP II) became effective in December 1999 and closed on the 30th June 2007. The
Project's closing date was extended by another five months to November 30, 2007 to
allow for the processing of Government of Uganda's request for additional financing.
The extension phase of ARTP II started in December 2007 and will end in June 2009.
This will provide the National Agricultural Research System (NARS) with assistance
to prepare itself effectively to meet emerging challenges during the transition, as it
plans for the next phase of support to agricultural research and dissemination.
