Abstract:

The primary role of NARO in agriculture is to improve livelihood of more than 68% of the
resource poor subsistence farmers operating in very militating environments. NARO implements
a research agenda with the aim of solving food and nutrition insecurity; unlocking
employment opportunities and wealth creation; increasing production and productivity;
value addition, market access and institutional capacity development.
To achieve this, NARO generates and promotes Technologies Innovations and Management
Practices (TIMPS) in crops, livestock, forestry and fisheries as well as integration of
Indigenous Knowledge with modern scientific methods in the research agenda such as
biodiversity conservation, characterisation, bio-prospecting.
In achieving its vision, mission and goal, NARO implements a client and impact oriented,
market responsive research agenda through its 16 Public Agricultural Research Institutes
(PAR1s) (7 National Agricultural Research Institutes, 9 Zonal Agricultural Research Institutes)
with 893 Staff representing 89.7% of the total establishment (646 male and 247 female)
of which 293 Scientists; 97 PhD, 171 MSc, 25 BSc. In the 2016/17 budget, NARO was allocated
UGX 114.13B, of which released UGX95.55B was released and 93.10% of the released
funds were spent.
