Abstract:

The use of genetic sexing
strains (GSS) for
operational medfly SIT
programmes is now firmly
established with all new
facilities being designed
to rear these strains.
Despite the widespread
uptake of this technology,
significant improvements
in terms of stability and
productivity are still
possible. In 2000 an
inversion was introduced
into a particular GSS both
to improve stability and to
take advantage of the
particular production
profile of a strain. Initial
results in 2001
demonstrated the
improvement of stability and higher production and it is planned to transfer this
strain to operational facilities midway through 2002.
