Abstract:

Surveys were carried out between March and May·1997 to rule out acute
trypanosomosis,follow)ngrePOrtSfromFarmersandneldVtterinariansinMbale
andTororodistrictsofanOutbreakofstrangediseasecauslngCOnSiderabledeaths
ofcattle,manifestingwithanaemia,bleedingthroughtheskinandears,before
deathand,peteChialhaemorrhagesonthetonBueandenlargedspleenobservedat
postmortem.Atota1808catdewereexaminedbyBuffyCoatTechnique(BCT)
fortrypanosomosisandtsetsetrapplngWaSdonein5subcountiesinMbaleand
Tororodistricts·Bovinetrypanosomosiswasfoundtobeprevalentin8·7%to
26.5%ofthe cattlein Mbale district andin27.8%to34.8%ofthe cattlein
Tbrorodistrict.TrypanosomeinfectionsfoundwerelargelyduetoTbpanosoma
vivax.CattleinfectedwithtrypanosomosishadalowermeanPCV(23·6±0·64)
thanthosefree(meanPCVof26.9±0.25).Ofthecadeexamined,43%hadPCV
(packedcel?volume)beloworequalto24,hencetT·anifestedanaemia·According
to the nndings,Clinicalsigns and highmortality,the outbreak was sue to
haemorrhagic T,Vivax.Thisisthe first timeanOutbreakofhaemorrhagic T·
vivaxis reportedin Uganda·Tsetseflies caughtwere predominantly ofthe
