Abstract:
Banana or plantain is one of the most important food crops in Uganda. About 75% of the fanners grow the crop on 1.3 million hectares.
Most of this production is for local consumption. In addition, banana insures income to the fanner throughout the year and provides soil surface cover, reduces soil erosion on steep slopes and a principal source of mulch for maintaining and improving soil fertility. Banana also provides feeds for animals.
