Abstract:

The National Agricultural Research Organization (NARO) has identified promising improved sweet potato varieties that are rich in Vitamin A, for the people of Uganda. These include Sowola - Ejumula, SPK004 (Kakamega) and 6. According to joint evaluation by farmers and researchers, the orange-fleshed varieties give yield of up to 20 tons per hectare (80 bags per acre). They are resistant to major pests and diseases, and storage roots are starchy, sweet and easy to cook.
They take 4 months (120 days) from planting to harvesting in warm areas of the country. Sweet potatoes are relatively easy to grow and yield better than most crops on soils that are less fertile.
