Abstract:

This CAS report provides the estimates of the quantities of fish landed in the riparian districts sharing the Ugandan waters of Lake Victoria; the monetary value of the fish catches; the contribution of different fish species to the total catches; and the trends of fish catch rates, and the total monthly catches for the sampled month since the beginning of the current CAS activities, from July 2005 to August 2007. The report also compares the annual total catch and gross beach value of 2006 and 2007. Through regular CASs, information is building up to show the new picture of fish production in the Ugandan waters of the lake. Similar surveys are simultaneously conducted in the Kenyan and Tanzanian parts of the lake, which provide the lake wide perspective of fisheries production. These data can now be integrated with the outputs of other ongoing Resource monitoring and socio-economic surveys to do a stock assessment for the lake, which will provide good basis for planning and management of the fisheries. The institute is very appreciative of the funding by the IFMP project, which is supporting the CAS programme and other Resource and Socio-economics monitoring activities. We are also very keen and supportive of all efforts being made to sustain resource monitoring programmes beyond the life of the IFMP project.
