Abstract:

Agroforestry research and development in Uganda was established at the end of 1986 through the Agroforestry
Research Network for Africa (AFRENA) for Eastern and Central Africa [Hoekstra 1988]. The objectives of
AFRENA programme were:-
• To develop appropriate agroforestry technologies for the highland areas in East and Central Africa
• To develop the nafional and regional capability to plan, formulate and implement agroforestry
research.
Agroforestry research and development has for the past 12 years concentrated in the two farming systems of
southern highlands (Kabale, Rukungiri) and Lakeshore crescent (Mukono, Wakiso, Mpigi).
