Abstract:

Availability of strategies and opportunities can drive SMEs competitiveness potential. In
Uganda, more SMEs are emerging and many of these SMEs activities have contributed to global
warming in form of carbon-dioxide release with less effort to reduce these negative effects. For
example, water risks are urgent today, given the population and climate change trends, the
demand for primary energy is projected to increase globally. The study assessed corporate
carbon emission reduction strategies to enhance competitiveness of small and medium
enterprises under different management practices in Uganda. The objectives of the study were to
determine how company, employee and customer emission reduction strategies enhance the
competitiveness of small and medium enterprises. Strategies were categorized as independent
variables and competitiveness as dependent variable. However, multiple regression analysis was
conducted to find out the effect of these strategies on the competitiveness. The study revealed
that employee strategies are the number one predictor of competiveness. The study suggested an
integrated carbon financing model which intends to contribute to carbon trade, climate change
mitigation policy in Uganda. Critical success factors for Competitiveness of carbon financing
strategies are determined by employee factors. Therefore, it’s those companies that will consider
human resources capacity building for competence and change of attitude in these companies
that will benefit from carbon emission strategies and such strategies will target carbon markets
and systems competitively.
