Abstract:

It is widely accepted that livestock are a vital component of rural
livelinoods in Africa. Animals provide highly nutritious foods, are sources of
income and savings, and provide draught power, transport, manure aid hides
and skins. In many African societies, livestock are the basis for trad t onal social
support systems and are an integral part of the African way of ',fel. n an era of
globalisation, predictions of future global demand for livestock products indicate
considerable opportunities for African producers2. In particular, hurnar copulation
growth and urbanisation in south-east Asia present a growing potential market for Africa and other developing regions.
