Abstract:

The banana is currently rated one of the most important food and cash crops in Uganda and is considered one of the most environment friendly food crops. However, productivity and plantation life of the crop has severely declined in recent years because of pests/diseases, soil fertility decline and socio-economic problems. A research programme initiated in 1989 to resolve these problems has since characterised the constraints and developed some solutions which are currently being tested at banana research benchmark sites, one of which is Kisekka sub-county in Masaka district.
