Abstract:

Because there are plantations of Maesopsis twenty years old in this and none of a similar age in Uganda, the Uganda Forest-Department has sked and received permission from the Kenya F.D. to establish research
s in them. Mr.Dawkins visited the forest in June, 1960 and started ' asurements of ten Maesopsis trees 23 years old, growing with Fagara macrophylla and other hardwood species., During the 'Past seven months these trees have averaged 1.80" 0. per annum and their basal area has risen from 11.52 sq.ft. to 11.93 sq.ft. - i.e. the equivalent of 6% per annum. Their mean Birth is now 46.46 c. after 23 years, that is a M.A.I.
of 2" per annum. Therefore there are signs that the C.A.I. is now falling,
although measurements over such a very short period are not a very reliableindication of such a trend.
