Deciduous bushland, in association with Acacia-Commiphora vegetation, at elevations from 350 - 1,650 metres.
Melia volkensii (Melia) grows in sandy-clay and shallow stony soils but prefers sandy soils with good drainage from sea-level to 1600 m a.s.I with mean annual rainfall of 300 — 800 mm and temperature range of 26-380C. Melia does very poorly in high elevations above 1,650m (E.g. in Kigezi, Rwanzori and Mt Elgon areas and water logged areas
