Abstract:
Dairy farming has been growing steadily in Uganda with many farmers adopting high milk producing exotic and cross-bred cattle, and better farming methods. The exotic breeds include the Jersey, Holstein Friesians, Guernsey, Ayshire and the Brown Swiss. Despite efforts to improve dairy farming in Uganda, there still are a number of constraints to increased milk production including diseases, poor feeding and management. Mastitis, a disease that affects the udder is the most underestimated disease of dairy cattle causing the highest economic losses. Even the dairymen dealing with the cows daily fail to appreciate its full importance.
