Abstract:
As part of a broader strategy aimed at poverty eradication, the Government of Uganda is implementing the "Plan for Modernisation of Agriculture" (PMA), which was launched in December 2000. The PMA is a multi-sectoral strategic and operational framework for eradicating poverty by transforming the country's subsistence agricultural economy into a thriving commercial agriculture thereby improving the quality of life of more than 85% of the country's population who live in rural areas, many of them subsistence farmers. Indeed, the transformation process is part of the Government's broader strategy of developing a dynamic and sustainable agricultural and agro-industrial sector.
